Which AI offers a more natural conversation feel?

There is no doubt that ChatGPT, Gemini, and Deepseek are among the most popular conversational AI models available today, providing free access to users worldwide with certain limitations. Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, there has been remarkable progress in the field of conversational AI. Soon after, other AI models emerged, some designed for specific purposes, offering varying levels of capability in data processing speed and user interaction.

The word “conversation” is central to the concept of conversational AI models, prompting a key question: to what extent can these models engage with users in a way that makes them forget they are interacting with a machine or artificial intelligence?

So, which AI provides the most natural conversational experience?

The same question, was posed to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Deepseek. Let’s take a look at their responses, analyse these.

Question: I have a problem with my mood tonight, it’s 10 o’clock, and I don’t know what to do with myself.

    ChatGPT’s response:

I hear you. Sometimes, nights like these can feel a bit restless or heavy. Do you want to talk about what’s on your mind, or would you rather distract yourself with something relaxing—maybe a good movie, some music, or a short walk outside?

If you want something productive but low-effort, you could jot down some thoughts, do some light reading, or even plan a small goal for tomorrow. Let me know how you’re feeling, and I’ll try to help.

    Analysis of ChatGPT’s response:

A response that is as natural as possible, which includes a statement acknowledging that nights can be difficult, followed by two questions: one offering support if the user wishes to talk about what’s on their mind, and the second offering a suggestion to distract the user with something enjoyable and relaxing. Additionally, there is a recommendation to read something. The response concludes with a question encouraging the user to share their feelings.

    Gemini’s response:

It’s completely understandable to feel that way. Nights can sometimes be tough. Here’s a breakdown of some things you could try, combining practical tips with an understanding of why those feelings might arise:

    Understanding Nighttime Moods:Circadian Rhythm:

    • Our bodies have natural rhythms, and sometimes, at night, those rhythms can amplify feelings of loneliness or sadness.
    • The lack of daylight can also affect mood.
      Reduced Distractions:
    • During the day, we’re often busy, but at night, things quiet down, and we’re left with our thoughts. This can lead to rumination.

    Analysis of Gemini’s response:

It starts promisingly, explaining that it’s okay to feel this way, especially at night, however, after the second sentence, Gemini turns the response into a listing of all possible causes of a bad mood and potential solutions for them. By the end of the long response, it goes as far as offering phone numbers that can help with loneliness or thoughts of suicide.

    Deepseek’s response:

I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. Nights can be particularly challenging when your mood is low, but there are a few things you can try to help yourself feel better or at least more grounded. Here are some suggestions:

    Acknowledge Your Feelings:

    • It’s okay to feel this way. Sometimes just recognizing and accepting your emotions can help take the edge off. You don’t have to “fix” anything right now—just be kind to yourself.

    Grounding Techniques:

    • If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try grounding yourself:
      • 5-4-3-2-1 Technique: Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.
      • Focus on your breathing: Take slow, deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.

    Analysis of Deepseeks’s response:

Right at the beginning, there is an expression of understanding for the mentioned feeling and a statement that nights can be challenging when in a bad mood, followed by suggestions that can help in such a situation. Deepseek continues the response into a listing of all possible causes of a bad mood and potential solutions for them.

Additional question to ChatGPT, Gemini and Deepseek

ChatGPT is far better when it comes to the naturalness of conversation with the user. In other words, the user is not overwhelmed with information in the form of sub-questions and possible solutions to them. For the purpose of writing this text, an additional question was posed to all three AI models.

    Question: I have bad thoughts.

    ChatGPT’s response was:

I’m really sorry you’re feeling this way right now. It’s tough dealing with bad thoughts, especially when they hit at night. Sometimes it can help just to talk things through, if you feel comfortable with that. Or, if you’re not in the mood for talking, there are grounding exercises or ways to distract your mind that might provide some relief.

Would you like to share what’s on your mind? Or, if you’d prefer, I can guide you through something calming, like deep breathing or a visualization exercise.

    Analysis of ChatGPT’s response:

Once again, ChatGPT responds in a fairly natural way and encourages the user to open up more about the topic they started. It also offers assistance, guiding the user on how to solve their problem. It is important to note that, in this response as well, there is no overwhelming amount of information.

Analysis of Gemini’s and Deepseek’s responses:

In their responses, both Gemini and Deepseek again tend to overwhelm the user with everything they have at their disposal that could be included in the answer to the inquiry, essentially sealing the topic from the user’s side. This way of responding, of course, creates a completely different impression for the user, who, from the very beginning, receives some indication that they are, after all, conversing with a machine.

    Final conclusion

This small test reveals nothing more than a clear picture of how ChatGPT is much more natural in conversation with users, compared to Gemini and Deepseek. It doesn’t mean it’s better AI model, it doesn’t mean it’s what all users need, nor that everyone will appreciate this quality, but simply put, it is more natural.
